I do not pretend to know anything about fashion, follow it, be able to afford or even identify what is RARE and what isn’t. What I do know is Nasir Mazhar has long been at the forefront of our consciousness.
For some, it’s been the recent collaborations with Skepta, for other it’s been nurtured for years. Whilst for me it was the redefinition of the “cap”/”hat”. I saw this thing, string at the back, pencil holder on the visor and thought – “that is a good idea!”. I did not realise it was Mazhar at the time.
Functionality is a big thing and those who do it right see the simplicity in and idea. For someone to redefine a structure, a mainstay that isn’t broken (maybe a bit played out in its evolution) is pretty smart.
Like I said I know nothing on the subject but listening to Nasir articulate his work and ideas in this interview, the pieces all fit into place.
“It’s not sportswear because you do not play sport in it” It doesn’t get more crystal than that.
It’s not street wear because everyone wears street wear so where is that term even from?? could not have put it better myself
Just as in music it seems people are being put into these boxes; these safe fluffy “they are not with us” “its so cute isn’t it” type of boxes that they can understand.
Just as in grime of any other naturally nurtured critical emergence in the fledgeling stages of crossing over, his work is pigeon holed and condescended on by those who appear to be in this upper echelon fashion sky.
“It’s just fashion” and so it should be. Neither is it clothing for gangs or tribes, it’s how we dress dumb dumb! Don’t be scared
Kudos to the guy and Showstudios for making this type of content. So much exist outside the bubbles we frequent, we evolve from dipping into places and learning.
If my head could fit a cap, I’d even be inclined to buy one.
