Chemist is a 20 year old producer and student – studying music composition for film and games with one hand, and drinking Lipton Ice Tea with the other.
Still pretty fresh in the game, he is probably most famously known for his choppy, click happy, undeniably catchy remix of Footsie’s ‘Prang Boy’. (D Double E spat over it on Amy Becker’s 1Xtra show with lots of biting and pissing references). Keeping it v. real and moving on swiftly to the original prods – Chemist dropped his first EP yesterday with Coyote Records, Defiance. With remixes from Last Japan and transatlantic grime aficionado Rabit, this ones an anthem (and far from tame)…
How did you get started in music on the grime instrumentals flex?
It all came about in school when I was in Year 10. I knew a couple local MCs and attempted to make beats for them…I stuck it out and here I am.
How did your relationship / signing with Coyote come about?
I think it was around the time Stealth was coming out when I actually sent some demos through, and they were well received. Me and Tomas then had a chat about a future 12″ and it just went from there…
Tell us more about the Defiance EP – any interesting info behind it?
The title track was something I made based around the Soul Reaver games, which is where some of the samples are from.
You work mainly on grime instrumentals – would you work with vocalists if the right MC came along and who would that be?
Definitely, would be sick to work with Newham Generals, Jendor, Trim, Roachee. I think they’re up there. One day…
Biggest or most admired name in music out there for you?
Dot Rotten stuff from a few years back musically…his beats were mental.
If you could live in any other musical era/year for a day when would you choose / why?
The 80s is where it happened…dem synths. Also, writing stuff for games and film would have been so good back then.
A couple of things you can’t live without…
Peach and passion fruit wraps, capri-sun tropical.
Any famous last words or more Chemist stuff coming up?
I got omething coming on Coyote Kings Vol 2, a collab with Filthy Vicars coming out and a project myself, Tom E Vercetti and lovedr0id are working on.
The Defiance EP is out now and available at Boomkat.
