Lazerpiff take it to the bridge for the second party with a hench line up; Manny bassline superstar Burga Boy, grime heavyweight Youngstar, Georgia Girls, recent Don’t Mix That contributor Riz La Teef and the resident selectors.
We caught up with Manchester’s Burga Boy ahead of his old skool bassline set at Lazerpiff to see where he’s at, where he’s going and whether he likes burgers or not…
You’re one of the key bassline producers – how did you get started in the scene?
I had a friend who introduced me to bassline at 16.. I enjoyed it. After then I made it my mission to get into the scene and sent the tunes I was making to everyone I knew. A following gradually grew and I was involved…once a few big DJs got ahold of my tunes everything escalated.
Was being from Manchester difficult when scene was so deeply involved with Sheff and Hudds?
Nah, everybody was on MSN religiously, that’s where I sent my tunes to a lot of DJs. There was a strong scene in the Midlands also, but tunes got sent about easily.
I lived in Manchester during the baseline peak, What did you think of it there? Did it translate well? Also what about London? A lot of people down here are hyped to see you play but I never thought bassline would have worked in London…
I was unfortunately from a gang related area. So any time I was to play in Manchester they would lock it off. I even tried doing my own raves but I was unsuccessful. I was never involved with gangs but occasionally attracted gangs to where I played. London is cool. I like the people who listen to bassline in London. I think it shows me peoples individuality down there, cause so many refused to accept it. The ones who did are normally cool people 🙂
Do you see a bassline resurgence? Or is it all throwback sets now?
Not from me unfortunately. I’m progressing and evolving. The throwbacks will live forever, but I’m aiming to move forward in my career.
As of recent I’ve been polishing my own stuff and mastering what I do. I am attempting to bring something unique to the table so not a lot influences me right now. I look up to people like Pharell, Timberland, Kanye West, Just Blaze, 9th Wonder, etc.. I used to listen them when I was younger and to me their music is timeless. Timeless classics are my goal.
Favourite bassline track / remix of all time…
Mmmm There’s loaddds I like.
Rodeo – I Love Candi & Burgaboy feat. Lanca – Are We Live
They aren’t my biggest bassline tunes but I really love how I produced them.
Whats the name mean – obsession with burgers? If so whats the dream burger – straight up McDo cheeseburger or something gourmet?
My last name is Burgher pronounced ‘Burger’. My mates just called me that and it stuck. Mmmmm Gourmet fish burger defo. Lowe the red meat.
Weirdest thing thats ever happened in a club?
A guy take a bite of a foam burger and then giving it to me. Lol.
What we can expect at Lazerpiff next Friday?
Straigh up ‘HOLE SKOOL’ bassline anthems.
The Rihanna remix you did was a certified banger – whats another track you would like to remix? Or maybe a famous vocalist to work with on an original production?
If I did do another remix, it would be something so totally out the box that I can’t think of it right now 😉
Burgaboy plays a bassline set at Lazerpiff on Friday 4th July in Stokey. Don’t miss it.
