“Night Slugs boss Bok Bok has had a long-standing grounding in sound-system culture—his interest was piqued by a Slimzee mix in 2003. But as the grime scene evolved he moved toward raw, upbeat grooves from further afield: Baltimore breaks, Detroit ghetto-tech, the footwork/ghetto-house hybrids in Chi-town, and South African arch riddim constructions. Night Slugs continues to have London’s underground club scene on lock, and so does Bok Bok as its head honcho alongside L-Vis 1990, carving out a distinct space on the futuristic side of bass-heavy, hip hop–leaning dancefloor-obliterators.”
