Made these pieces on New Year’s Day. I was watching videos of Thunderdome, a famous hardcore techno / gabber festival that happened in Rotterdam back in ’97. A lot of people reeled at me showing this to them, thinking I’d finally lost it getting into copious amounts of speed and UV bodypaint. Truth is I just love the clothing.
Tom Nijhuis, a Dutch designer, created a stunning collection called ‘1995’ back in 2011. Although named after a year, I feel the collection is timeless. And shortly after checking it out I spent a good 6 months looking into the whole hardcore scene. I’ve been heavily influenced by artwork from rave, trance and jungle (to name a few) since the crazy young age of 8, after playing Wipeout on the PS1 and obsessing over the excellent OST and The Designers Republic‘s brilliant graphic design input.
The videos attempt to emulate all of these different elements. I’ve tried to create pieces that encapsulates the super slick design work from the time, as well as the powerful video-game boom. Remember the Lucozade ads featuring Tomb Raider?
