The unique sounds of tastemakers Sly and Robbie have been musical monuments for the seasoned DJ and the reggae/dancehall critic for decades, so when three tracks from the duo and their soulful Taxi Gang resurfaced today, those old school riddim raiders hoped on board leaving the “clash” loyalists in the dust. The tracks assert their diverse range of sounds, from the funky bass in “Green Juice” to the electro ragga of “Dirty Taxi Fatta Mix” and the sex-aphoning upbeat of “So Far Away,” Sly & Robbie were mix masters. To some, they may seem like dusty old tunes but if you tune your ear to some of the “newer” sounds popular deejays have been experimenting with this year, you’ll realize they’re really hybrid versions of old favorites. I was unable to find any soundbites of the Sly & Robbie tracks but Dancehall.mobi is streaming direct from their site. After the jump I included the tracks for download (via JWonder) and image videos of Busy Signal’s, “Dah Style Deh,” for its likeness to the heavy drum notes and rapid-fire funk beat of “Green Juice.” Also Aidonia’s sleepy electricity in, “My Heart Is Hers” and Vybz Kartel’s synthy wail in, “Yuh Love” for their similarity to the house-y club styles of “Dirty Taxi Fatta Mix.”
