What a long weekend. In all honesty all weekends should be like that. I’ve been in bed for the last 2 days trying to dream it back but not even as much as a drum-line have I managed to encounter in my sleep trails. I’m talking about the great escape weekender which me and my comrade’s almost missed out on. Failing to realise that delegate registration was almost a month in advance we entertained the idea of buying tickets. After that sentence was said out-loud we instantly decided against it and were gonna try and charm our way through the weekend. The plan was devised, we’ll go to the registration office (not the marriage one, but the great escape one) and say we work for the guardian or something? Maybe that wouldn’t work? Maybe? so we decided to go for something so low and unread that people were bound to believe us. “The Badger”  stupid as it may sound and a tad seedy, it is the brain child liberal student newspaper up at Sussex University. Seeing as they are into liberal thought we figured they wouldn’t mind if we stole their identities for a weekend. ‘Mike Alpha’ pulled out a couple of names from the database (Internet) and from this point we would be known as Ben Hobson and Thomas Callaby. My other colleague was fortunate enough to penetrate enemy lines using his own name ‘Juliet Whiskey’.

Getting the passes were as easy as turning up to an off-license at the age of 6 with and imaginary ID card for the blind clerk. Seriously it was a piece of piss. Obviously our charm and individual style made sure we were that much more convincing. Added to this we brain-washed them with Jedi Mind tricks by asking them how they were?, if it had been busy? will they get to see any gigs, blah blah blah…Celebrations were kept to a minimum until the next day, the comrade’s and myself went back to HQ and decided to get some rest. Thursday the 14Th approached very quickly it was also GurnGurnGurns’ first summer party. We managed to keep it rather low key, our homies who just got back from NYC told us about Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson (what a mouthful) so we went down and checked him out. Pretty dope band and songwriter.

Afterwards went to the Gurn night ‘FRESH OFF THE BOAT’. Shit was pretty messy and Russ Rockwell Kilt it HARD! Shout out to all who came through especially our London Family and the DJ’s for showing lots of love. We’re working harder on the next one already to be prepared to rock out with you’re cocks out!!

FRIDAY 16th May

Started out at 15:00 hours at The hope, Brighton for DIE DIE DIE! from New Zealand which was proper gnarly.  The lead singer coming into the crowd and shocking out. It was also very sauna in there nice sweaty pits are a good way to go. Next came The Veils who were a lot different not quite vibe killers but very folk and falling asleep music (no disrespect).

I thought my highlight would be Micachu and the Shapes although my comrade thought it was Piccachu from Pokemon. He was rather disappointed it wasn’t but happy with the experimental sound. The crowd were very dumbstruck as to what we were actually listening to but the shit was progressive enough for my simple ass.

I really wanted to see I Blame Coco very dope sounding ska n b chick but like all her previous Brighton gigs she canceled (maybe something to do with the sea air, either that or the love letters i write to her on Myspace probably freaked her out, i dunno) I dragged my comrades to Digital but she wasn’t on. Instead came Man Like Me‘ who for me had probably the best stage presence I’ve seen in a long time. They were just super fun with their tunes, synchronized moves and bright clothing. All i remember is finding a host of fit girls and all rocking out.

The final stop of the night was ‘Corn Exchange’ where we caught the end of Mumford and sons. Apparently tipped for big things they performed to a massive crowd and had everyone spellbound.

Next was Metronomywho started off in Brighton. The lead singer even told of how he used to work behind the bar of the venue. I really like they electro pop sounds and we firmly implemented ourselves by claiming a significant amount of enemy territory. My comrade mounted a huge iron pole to deliver our message of intent and the rest of the time we just cut up some shapes. We proceeded to another venue where we met some woman folk, took them home and penetrated them with deep cutting song lyrics.
